The fifth installment of the World Baseball Classic ends today, March 21, with a winner-takes-all match between Team USA and Samurai Japan.

Team USA are the defending champions, having won the last title in 2017; however, Team Japan has won two out of the four WBC tournaments played so far. It’s likely to be an exciting matchup between two elite teams.

The World Cup-style tournament replaced the former Baseball World Cup, but cooperation between World Baseball Softball Confederation and various major leagues worldwide means that the best professional baseball players in the world get an opportunity to participate in the tournament.

What To Know About Tonight’s Matchup

The meeting between Team USA and Samurai Japan is one that fans have been hoping for since the WBC kicked off in early March. The tournament, overall, has been exciting for fans to watch, and this final game, set to feature some of the best baseball players in the world, should be no exception.

While Team USA won their semifinal handily, scoring 14 runs to Cuba’s two, Japan never actually held the lead in their semifinal game, which ended with a score of 6-5 thanks to a walk-off hit.

One of the biggest storylines going into the matchup is that L.A. Angels teammates Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani are playing against each other — while it’s still unclear whether or not we’ll actually see the two face off as pitcher and batter, it’ll still be fun to watch the teammates be in opposite dugouts for once.

Team USA is stacked with MLB All-Stars. Their starting lineup includes Mookie Betts, Trout, Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Kyle Schwarber, Will Smith, Pete Alonso, Tim Anderson, and Trea Turner, with D-backs pitcher Merrill Kelly on the mound.

Players to look out for on Japan include Ohtani and 3B Munetaka Murakami, who drove in two runs in Japan’s semifinal walk-off victory. They’ll be starting Shōta Imanaga on the pitchers’ mound, over Ohtani and Padres pitcher Yu Darvish.
