These 29 Men Took Refreshing Red Carpet Risks This Year

Men in Hollywood have traditionally played it safe on the red carpets—but that’s finally changing. Gone are the days when A-list gents only wear classic suits or tuxedos. In fact, judging by the very best menswear looks this year, they may soon become an anomaly. Instead, men went for bolder fashion choices this year, choosing ensembles that range from sculptural and interesting (see: Justin Bieber’s XXL Balenciaga suit worn to the Grammys) to wild and dramatic (see: Lil Nas X’s giant feathered headpiece by Harris Reed, worn to the VMAs). In honor of this exciting shift, then, Vogue is looking back on 29 of the year’s most exciting and risk-taking men.

When Timothée Chalamet hit the red carpet in Venice for the Bones and All premiere, he chose a shiny red Haider Ackermann backless halter top. Talk about unexpected! Another look that made a splash? When Wesley Snipes showed up to this year’s Oscars in a silky blazer and matching bermuda shorts, both by Givenchy. It was an ensemble that simply nobody could have predicted, yet we still talk about it months later. How Snipes pulled off such a tricky silhouette with ease is beyond us.

It’s not to say every winning red carpet look from men this year was so dramatic. There were more stealthy choices that still had an impact. On more than one occasion, for instance, Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai paired classic tailoring with his own, Indigenous-made jewelry. Leslie Odom Jr. gravitated towards more refined suits in high-impact colors, like the loose, baby blue Dolce & Gabbana style he wore to the Glass Onion premiere in Los Angeles last month.

From the subtle to the extreme, this year’s most photographed events proved that Hollywood men are stepping outside of their comfort zone and going for more memorable outfits. And in 2023, something tells us this isn’t going to slow down just yet. We say bring it on!

Below, 29 of the best dressed men this year.
