Amanda Serrano vs. Erika Cruz live updates, results, highlights from 2023 boxing fight

Known for its history-making events, Madison Square Garden will be the place to be on February 4. Amanda Serrano and Erika Cruz compete to determine the undisputed featherweight champion.

The fight takes place inside MSG’s Hulu Theater. Serrano holds the WBC, WBO, IBO, IBF, and The Ring titles, while Cruz is the WBA champion.

A pro since 2009, Serrano is a seven-division world champion. She beat Heather Hardy in 2019 for the WBO and WBC titles, Daniela Romina Bermudez for the IBO title, and Sarah Mahfoud in September for the IBF and The Ring titles. It is her second attempt at undisputed, as she lost to Katie Taylor last April for lightweight gold.

With this win, Serrano would be the first Puerto Rican to hold all the gold in one division. She has been working hard for this moment and is ready to make history against a game Cruz.

“It wasn’t just this week that I was concentrating on Erika Cruz. This whole camp has only been Erika Cruz,” Serrano stated at the pre-fight press conference. “I know she’s a tough Mexican fighter. She is the WBA champion. She has the last piece of the puzzle, I have all the rest, and we both want the same thing. We’re both world champions, and that’s what we’re going to show come Saturday night. The real winners are going to be the fans because it’s going to be a fight and a fumble. It’s going to be punches and bunches, and I have all the respect for Erika Cruz for taking the fight. It’s a historic night for both of us, and I just can’t wait.”

Cruz has been the WBA champion since she beat Jelena Mrdjenovich in 2021. She has defended the title twice. “Dinamita” is ready to join an elite group of Mexican fighters to become undisputed, with Canelo Alvarez being the most recent.

The underdog (Bet MGM has her at +500, while Serrano is the -700 favorite), Cruz has also had to hear questions surrounding a potential Taylor-Serrano rematch. She’s focused on the task at hand. Everything else is just noise, which Cruz will leave out of the ring.

“To be honest, we’re not focused in any way on what people will say,” Cruz stated. “We don’t pay attention to what’s said on social media. I’m just completely focused on my team. As soon as we knew the date was to be scheduled, knew that I was facing Amanda Serrano, there were no distractions. I’m just really delighted and really happy with God. I also have to say thanks to my father, who is always with me in every moment. On Saturday night, it will be a historic moment for Mexico.”

The co-main event will see Alycia Baumgardner and Elhem Mekhaled fight for the status of undisputed super-featherweight champion. Baumgardner, the IBF, IBO, WBC, and WBO champion, has won seven in a row, beating Terri Harper and Mikaela Mayer for super-featherweight gold. Mekhaled, a former interim WBC super-featherweight champion, last fought in May, losing to Delfine Persoon.

The WBA title is also on the line. Hyun Mi Choi was named “Champion in Recess” so this fight could happen.

“This Saturday I will become undisputed. I have been claiming this, and I speak it, and again, everybody will see an amazing performance,” Baumgardner stated. “The journey has been amazing. I’m so happy with everything and how everything went, with going to the UK, with building my profile, with having these hard fights, proving myself repeatedly. We’re going to prove again to the world why I’m the best and why I’ve become undisputed this Saturday.”
