NBA All-Star voting 2023: Takeaways from final fan vote returns to decide captains, starting lineups

The NBA revealed the third and final fan vote returns for the 2023 NBA All-Star Game on Thursday, Jan. 19.

As in years past, fans account for 50 percent of the final vote for the All-Star Game. New to this year is the process, with all fan voting for the All-Star Game being completed exclusively through NBA.com or the NBA App. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 21.

While these returns provide an idea of who may start in the 2023 NBA All-Star Game, the remaining 50 percent comes from current players and a media panel, with each group accounting for 25 percent of the total vote.

Without further ado, here are the takeaways from the final returns…

The tightest races for starting spots

As expected, the tightest races for starting spots are in the frontcourt. Jayson Tatum (4,521,414) holds a lead of just over 200,0000 votes over Joel Embiid (4,318,035), who might not end up starting despite playing at an MVP level this season.

They’re both still slated to start, but it is worth noting that Giannis Antetokounmpo has overtaken Kevin Durant as the East’s leading vote-getter, which would make him a captain for the game.

Almost poetically, the closest West race is between Anthony Davis (3,838,171) and Zion Williamson (3,760,732), with Davis’ lead coming in under 80,000 votes. With some time before voting ends, it could be a photo finish.

The fans have seemingly made up their minds on backcourt starters in each conference, with Irving, Mitchell, Curry and Doncic running away with the fan vote.

Also receiving votes

Among hopefuls for their first All-Star selection, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (1,843,460) leads the way in the West, while Tyrese Haliburton (578,752) leads all potential first-timers in the Eastern Conference.

Also of note: LA’s Austin Reaves (392,546) and New York’s Derrick Rose (384,557) each land in the top 10 of guards in their respective conferences despite both mostly playing in reserve roles this season.

Magic rookie Paolo Banchero lands at eighth among frontcourt players in the East. He might have a hard time landing in the All-Star Game this season, but the 20-year-old will definitely play in his fair share of All-Star Games before all is said and done with his career.
