English Premier League table 2022/23: Updated EPL standings and race for title, Champions League places, and relegation survival

The Premier League season restarted on Boxing Day with Arsenal sporting a five-point advantage over defending champions Manchester City for first place, while Nottingham Forest, Southampton and Wolves occupied the bottom-three relegation spots.

The Gunners face a tricky London derby against West Ham, while Manchester City will be tested by spunky Leeds United on Wednesday. Chasers Newcastle United managed to close the gap with an impressive 3-0 win at Leicester City — one made better since Tottenham could only draw at Brentford in the opening game of the day.

A handful of other Big Six clubs — Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United — will continue their push to challenge for top-four spots, and they open the holiday schedule with matches they are each expected to win.

At the bottom of the table, Julen Lopetegui’s debut for Wolves ended in a dramatic win at Everton, but Southampton’s change in manager could not change their immediate fortunes as they lost at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Below is the full Premier League table followed by a snapshot of each race.

Premier League title race

Arsenal had a five-point lead atop the table as action resumed with the Boxing Day slate. The Gunners’ win and Manchester City’s loss in the last round before the World Cup saw the gap grow.

Newcastle charged into second place with a comfortable win at Leicester, and they next meet th league leaders before a home game against Leeds. Tottenham fought back from 2-0 down to draw at Brentford and will now face Aston Villa (home) and Crystal Palace (away) in their next two matches.

Champions League places & European places

The names that are the biggest surprises in the race for European places are Newcastle (2nd) and Brighton (6th) as they continue their push up the table and the Magpies could nip a Champions League berth by season’s end.

Manchester United also look like they have what it takes to make a top-four push, while Liverpool have serious ground to make up. They moved back into the top six by beating Aston Villa 3-1.

Only the top four make it into the Champions League. Teams that finish 5th through 7th have a shot at Europa League and Conference League berths.

Premier League relegation

It’s a jam of teams at the bottom of the Premier League with six teams separated by just three points.

The pressure to avoid the drop has already seen new managers at Aston Villa (Unai Emery) and Bournemouth (Gary O’Neil), with Julen Lopetegui (Wolves) and Nathan Jones (Southampton) making contrasting impressions in their opening games on Boxing Day.

West Ham and Everton are two of the bigger names in the bottom five places, but managers David Moyes and Frank Lampard have been afforded the opportunity to help their teams out of this early hole. Still, the Toffees’ dramatic loss to Wolves will not have helped Lampard’s plans.
