Why isn’t Glover Teixeira fighting at UFC 282?

A rematch from UFC 275 will not be taking place at UFC 282 on December 10. In fact, both Jiri Prochazka and Glover Teixeira will not be involved in fight week activities at all.

One is due to injury. The other is due to morals.

At UFC 282, Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev will fight one another for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title. Blachowicz, the former champion, will have another shot at gold. Riding a nine-fight win streak, Ankalaev is ready to show why he is the most feared man in the division.

Prochazka relinquished the title after suffering a shoulder injury. The new main event was altered a few times before becoming official. One thing to note: Teixeira was involved in plans post-Prochazka.

Why isn’t Glover Teixeira fighting at UFC 282?

Following Prochazka’s injury announcement, the UFC offered the former champion in Teixeira a fight against Ankalaev. Teixeira turned down that fight. He preferred to fight someone he was familiar with in Blachowicz. The Brazilian beat Blachowicz for the title back in October 2021.

The UFC did not budge. As a result, the original co-main event will now headline the card.

“I told them I needed more time for this guy, that he has a different style,” Teixeira stated to ESPN. “The guy is a southpaw. I said, ‘What about fighting him in Brazil?’ They denied that and said they needed someone to fight in Vegas. I said, ‘OK, I’ll fight Jan in Vegas. If you’re going to throw me off, Jan has a regular stance. Ankalaev is a totally different game. I need more time.”

Teixeira, 43, does not have an expiration date on his career. He is expected to face the winner of Blachowicz and Ankalaev at some point in 2023. Prochazka will most likely be missing the majority of 2023. Teixeira told ESPN he earned the right to fight for the title.

As far as having regrets about missing out on a payday and a title fight at UFC 282, Teixeira does not have any.

“This could be my last chance to fight for the title,” Teixeira went on to say. “I want to win this belt. I’m training like a maniac. I am a professional. Every time I show up, I put on a great fight. Win or lose. I’m not going to go in there and just show up to fight a guy because they say so. This is a dangerous game and I need to prepare myself the best I can. My family is watching me. I have a lot of students in the gym watching me. I need to be professional. So, I am 100 percent behind the decision I made.”
