Bella Ramsey Says ‘The Last Of Us’ Season 2 Is ‘Darker’ Than First Season

Season 2 of HBO‘s hit series The Last Of Us will be “darker” than the first, according to star Bella Ramsey.

Ramsey starred as Ellie alongside Pedro Pascal (Joel) in the television adaptation of the popular video game.

The first episode of the show premiered in January 2023 and quickly became HBO’s second biggest premiere in over a decade after House Of The Dragon, attracting 4.7 million viewers in the U.S. across HBO and streaming service HBO Max. It was renewed for a second season shortly thereafter.

Production on the new season would have presumably started this year, which was seemingly confirmed by Ramsey during a recent interview with Vanity Fair where they teased the direction and tone of the new season.

“It’s darker,” they said. “It’s really a story about revenge, and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love.”

Earlier this year, co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin revealed that Season 2 will be adapted into “more than one season” of television, with an even bigger production than the first.

The Last Of Us has garnered attention and praise from fans and reviewers alike, with Decider’s Joel Keller writing: “With any show like this, the ability to build the world both before and after the apocalypse happens is key, and Mazin and Druckmann are able to do this.”

Auditions for season two of The Last Of Us, during which actors are being asked to read lines directly from the 2020 PlayStation game The Last Of Us Part II, were reportedly put on hold last month due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.
